I have always loved animals. Growing up my family had yellow labs. I became interested in goats after my family told me we couldn’t afford horses. But I’m glad I did become involved with goats and learned so much about them during my years in 4-H. Like many people starting out, I fell for the stereotypical beliefs as portrayed on TV and in books.
When Lyla and Isaac came into my life, I thought they were fine. They were small so I figured easy to work with and I figured would warm up to me in no time. Isaac warmed up quicker than Lyla and I soon found Lya HATED being fussed over, let alone being pet. Isaac was ok to show, but Lyla did not improve no matter how much I worked with her. She was clearly not 4-H quality. That’s when I convinced my parents I wanted to switch to Oberhalis after seeing them at the fair and seeing how friendly/easy they are to work with. I acquired Honey my second year in 4-H and Aspin 2 years later when I bred Honey (yes he was her baby). They were a dream to show at fair. I no longer struggled working with them because they wanted to be with me and didn’t mind being handled.
